Since this is a pretty low-key game, the mods are not really running the show plotwise. So we leave it up to you, the players, to make this setting more than just a magical high-school sandbox.
Comment here with your ideas for gamewide events! Small school-event sized stuff like bake sales or seasonal dances? Go for it. Citywide events? Sure. Worldwide? Lay it on me.* Or if you just need an NPC to facilitate something for you, let me know and I'll get on it.
The ideas you present here can be as vague or as specific as you want, and I encourage people to chime in and discuss and build on the ideas of others. You don't need to give us fully-fledged plans; this post is for brainstorming. My job is to take your brainstorming and turn it into a fully-fledged plan.

A strange form of contract duel that's basically just IC Hearthstone or something (preferably something we can play free and is somewhat simple) gains popularity for a while. Fades out after a few weeks.
