FAQ

What's this thing?
St. Augustus Academy is a casual private microgame - too big to be a PSL, too small to be an RP - set at the titular private school in Koletisburg, Oregon. It's a middle/high school modern fantasy AU game - the conceit is that the school is secretly a haven for the supernatural.

What's so casual about it?
There's no Activity Check, no intensive overarching metaplot, no high engagement demands, and a really easy app. We're all basically just here to do whatever we want to and have fun with it.

Who can join?
The game is restricted to me - [plurk.com profile] ProfessorProf - my friends, and the friends of my friends. However, be aware that even then I reserve the right to decline applications if I'm not comfortable with something.

How many characters can I play?
For initial open, let's say one. Overall maximum once we get going, three, and only one can be faculty.

Are OCs allowed?
Sure.

How far can I AU someone?
Pretty much go nuts. If you want to change, like, gender or ethnicity, at least put in a note explaining your thoughts on doing so.

Where is this Koletisburg, OR?
On the coast. Also, imaginary. 'Koletis' is Estonian for 'Monster'.

So what's up with this school?
St. Augustus Academy for Gifted Youths is a big boarding school in a small town, with a very expensive-looking campus and a reputation for weird mystery. Every now and then, people get mysteriously transferred to the school from halfway across the country (or further), and nobody's saying why. Nobody seems to know who the principal is, or who's running this show.

The big secret is that most of the student body and faculty of the academy are magical people or creatures. There are humans who awakened to mysterious magical powers before or after transferring. There are also vampires, mermaids, tanuki, robots, ghosts, and other things that are even weirder. Their Glamours let them go unnoticed among people who don't already know about all this, but they're here, and they tend to cause enough trouble that it's best to put them all at one place, where someone can keep a close eye on them.

Even beyond the school, Koletisburg is generally just a weird place where lots of weird shit happens.

Okay but more importantly than all that boring nonsense, does it have school uniforms?
It does, but we haven't decided on the colors yet.

What's the situation at game start?
Winter term just started. Nothing special is happening, aside from an unusually big wave of new transfers. Players can be established students or new kids on the block at their own discretion.

What kinds of posts can we do?
The only game-wide network is text-based. So, your options are:
  • Action posts.
  • Open text posts.
  • Private conversations of whatever format you can justify - phone calls, IM, whatever.
But mostly action posts.

What's up with Contract Duels?
Contract Duels are the primary way of resolving disputes between paranormals at St. Augustus Academy. Two people agree on the stakes of victory/defeat, then they get pulled into a magical Duelscape constructed out of the surrounding terrain and psyches of the fighters. Within the confines of a Contract Duel, your full 'canon' powerset is available, along with any sort of canonical goofy outfits, and everyone can let loose and fight as ridiculously as they want.

When the fight ends, nobody is actually injured (usually) - however, the loser is spiritually exhausted, and can't use their powers for a while. In addition, they are magically bound to honor the agreed stakes from the beginning of the fight.

In a Duelscape, time behaves strangely. The time that passes in the real world is usually much less than the time it took inside the duel itself. The reverse is also possible, but it's very rare and a great excuse for a hiatus.

Can mundanes do Contract Duels?
No.

Can more than two people Contract Duel at once?
Yes.

What do Contract Duels look like from the outside?
The students disappear, being replaced with a floating bubble within which jumbled scenes of the duel can be seen. With certain esoteric skills, it might be possible to join a duel already in progress.

Can X, Y or Z happen in a Contract Duel?
Look, the rules aren't super strict. If something seems neat and works for your plot, roll with it. The goal is to enable both goofy school antics and goofy magic fights.

Can powers function outside of duels?
Yes, but they're much weaker and more subtle - especially for humans.

Quick question, is night school a thing or not? Kinda relevant question for vampires and other nocturnal types.

What are glamours, exactly. Like beyond their actual effects. Is it a skill that students are taught? A natural effect that just happens? Something someone in the school is doing to keep things under wraps?

So some of this has been mentioned on Plurk before, but to put it in one place...

The state of magic outside of contract duels, or the potential for how dangerous they COULD be outside of the school. Obviously things are more subtle in this world, but clearly - just by some folks' back stories alone, the necessity to train kids how to use their stuff properly - there has to be some more dangerous sides to the magical world out there, right? How far could that potentially reach?

This is highly relevant to Nanoha, as it will inform just how her magical teachings swing. Is she preparing them for a life potentially fraught with some sort of peril, or simply means to go about things and not get caught, utilizing contract duels for fun and profit?

I can swing however, but getting a good idea of how that all goes would be really helpful doing stuff with her. :3
